Do Awesome agree with the following statement?

‘The essential message of biblical equality is simple and straightforward: Gender, in and of itself, neither privileges nor curtails one’s ability to be used to advance the kingdom or to glorify God in any dimension of ministry, mission, society or family. The differences between men and women do not justify granting men unique and perpetual prerogatives of leadership and authority not shared by women. Biblical equality, therefore, denies that there is any created or otherwise God-ordained hierarchy based solely on gender. Egalitarianism recognises patterns of authority in the family, church and society – it is not anarchistic – but rejects the notion that any office, ministry or opportunity should be denied anyone on the grounds of gender alone’. (Discovering Biblical Equality complementarity without hierarchy – page 13).

From my point of view it is to be regretted that this discussion/disagreement between Reform and Awesome did not take place in public on the web, open to all to contribute. We could then all have challenged/supported points made and assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the lines of argument. It will be interesting to see whether the published papers capture these essential interactions.

Can I echo Alison's comment. I am going to be ordained this year (aged 41) and hope to bring experience and confidence which I did not have when I was younger. It didn't occur to me when I was younger that God might be calling me to full time ministry and I travelled a round about way to get here. I wonder if the lack of women role models made a difference, all the churches I attended had male clergy in charge.

Hi Alison I think this is a really valuable point, and one that ties in with a culture that under values those who are older (which isn't 42) and so I guess its thinking about how both to encourage younger women but then also value those who are older, and come into ministry with their experience. Interesting as to whether the same feeling is felt by men who come into ministry later in life (possibly not?)....Tamsin
